Home Improvement Services

It is the policy of the Sault Tribe Housing Authority to provide decent, safe, sanitary and affordable housing opportunities to enrolled members of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. The Sault Tribe Housing Authority (STHA) provides home rehabilitation assistance, within approved budget amounts, for the rehabilitation of homes that are privately owned by members of the tribe.

Home Rehabilitation Assistance will be provided to income eligible families living in the seven-county service area: Chippewa, Mackinac, Luce, Schoolcraft, Delta, Alger and Marquette counties.

Home Rehab/Improvement Program

The STHA provides assistance to pay for rehabilitation expenses, building permits, local licensing requirements, and when necessary, construction of new homes. Eligible low-income families may receive a grant or loan for the weatherization, rehabilitation of their home, or construction of a new home. Participation in the Rehabilitation Program is limited to low/moderate income families as defined by eligibility criteria at the time of application. Participants are required to provide documentation for verification of low-income status. There is a one-year waiting period for the Home Rehabilitation Program. When tribal members submit an application, it is for the following year. Selection is based on a point system and availability of funding. There is no emergency funding.

Applications are accepted year-round.

Owner-Occupied Rehabilitation Program

The Housing Authority Owner Occupied Rehabilitation Service Program provides energy conservation to those tribal homeowners faced with costly repairs and replacement of substandard heating systems and water heaters.

Applications are accepted year-round.

Sanitation Program

The Sanitation Program provides adequate sanitation facilities for new and existing homes. This program provides assistance to Sault Tribe households to improve their quality of life.

Applications are accepted year-round.
